Fall Indulgences For Teens

Everywhere I have been going lately there has been tempting fall foods… they all look delicious! It ranges from lattes to pumpkin scones to well pumpkin everything! As you well no, it isn’t good to indulge in those things everyday, but every once in a while, meaning once a month or so, it  is perfectly fine to indulge in those things…. An easy day to plan it for for this month is HALLOWEEN! (skip the candy and go for one of the things below)

When you are going to indulge here are the things that are healthier than some of the other options out there:

Craving a holiday coffee?

Head over to starbucks or your local coffee shop and get a 12 0z skinny pumpkin latter, little whip. It will satisfy your craving, but not completely throw you off your path.

Craving a pastry?

Try a pumpkin scone or a little slice of pumpkin pie. Again it will satisfy your cravings, but these things don’t contain to many calories… just check your portion size!

Craving a cold treat?

Buy some organic pumpkin ice cream and have a very very small amount…. super yummy and will totally get you in the fall mood!

Those are the main things that are around, and yes they are all delicious, just remember a treat is a treat…. if you absolutely need something sweet one day then have a little bit of super dark chocolate.

The Truth Behind Treats

We all love treats. Whether it is chocolate, pasta, frozen yogurt, or pizza. The thing about treats is… they are treats! They aren’t supposed to be eaten everyday, but in moderation. In this post I will explain how, when, where, and in what quantity you should have treats!

When to have treats

Treats, as I said before are TREATS. I usually recommend having them once a week. Whether you order pizza with your friends, go on a date at a frozen yogurt place, or eat a chocolate chip cookie. Whatever it is you feel like, eat that. But only once a week! That way, you are eating clean and healthy most of the time, but aren’t completely denying yourself of the things that you love.

How to not binge on your treat

Sometimes we can get so excited that we have a treat, we overeat it, and then it isn’t even worth it. When you are having a treat, put in the the right portions… For example:

  • Cookies: 1 cookie
  • Pizza: 2 slices with a side salad
  • Pasta: 1 cup
  • Frozen yogurt: 1 1/2 cups total, even when mixing flavors
  • Chocolate: 1-2 squares
  • Ice cream: 1 scoop

Treat yourself, eat healthy, exercise, and enjoy yourself!

Delicious Snacks

It is important to keep our hunger satisfied, especially when we are at school. Here are some snacks you can buy, and make at home to take with you. Enjoy!

  • TlC or Kashi granola bars. (My favorite is the dark chocolate coconut)
  • 1 piece of babybel cheese with 6 trisect crackers.
  • 1 apple with 1 tablespoon peanut or almond butter.
  • Vegetable sticks.
  • 12 whole unsalted almonds.
  • 1/4 cup KIND granola.
  • 1 container of Chobani greek yogurt.
  • 2 Newman peanut butter cups.
  • 1 bag of POP Chips.

Pick your snacks in relation to what you are craving, i.e, sweet, salty, filling, light, etc. All of those snacks above can curb those cravings and hunger, and are delicious and healthy!

Ice Cream Or Fro-Yo?

On hot summer days, the best taste in the entire world is something cold and creamy! Instead of getting ice cream, take all your friends to a frozen yogurt shop like TCBY, Cool Berry, or any other place!

Frozen yogurt has a lot less fat than ice cream, and, has the benefits of the probiotics found in yogurt! If you don’t know what probiotics are, here it is in a simple form: They help you digest food.

Like any other treat, you still need to be careful about your portions, here are the tips that I use when I get frozen yogurt:

  • Go more for fruity fresh flavors as opposed to heavy flavors.
  • Use fruits as your toppings.
  • Hold the lever down for 3 seconds, no more!
  • Only taste 2 flavors.
  • Make sure it is only half way full.

Stick to those tips and you’ll stay perfectly slim!

Eat When You’re Hungry Stop When You’re Full

Nowadays, the servings that are put on our plates are, for  lack of a better word, gigantic! Because the servings are big and they are on our plate, we end up eating way more than we are supposed to. The easiest way to avoid eating to much is… eating when you are hungry and stopping when you are full!

It’s a simple concept, yet a lot of people don’t understand what it really means. Here it is: Eat only when you are hungry, not just because it is lunch time, and stop when you are satisfied and not stuffed!

How much is one serving?

I usually measure it by putting a food amount that matches my fist, no more no less, and eating that. It usually satisfies me and helps train my body to eat the right amount!

So the next time a huge plate of nachos is put on your plate, grab a few off, eat them, and then really decide if you are still hungry.

Here is the saying that keeps me on track: “Nothing tastes as good as healthy feels”. It’s so true!
